The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has called on the federal government to increase salaries in ‘feminised’ industries by 9%. The ACTU’s secretary, Sally McManus commented that an increase will alleviate the high cost of living pressures and take a first step to properly value the work of the women who do critical work for the community.
Yolanda Kerr, TDC Global’s head of growth APAC, noted that while the 9% increment in the minimum wage across feminised industries may appear extreme, a significant change and increase in pay was required o bridge the gender pay gap. She noted that the increase would be a step in the right direction to address the systemic undervaluing of work traditionally performed by women.
