From 1 July 2024, businesses may be impacted by changes to the following legislation or policies:
National minimum wage increase
The national minimum wage will increase by 3.75% and will apply to employees full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2024.
Super guarantee rate increase
Employers will have to increase the super guarantee rate for employees from 11 per cent to 11.5 per cent from 1 July 2024.
Business name and company registration fees
The Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) will increase company fees and business name fees from 1 July 2024.
Engineered stone ban
From 1 July 2024, a ban on the manufacture, supply, processing and installation of engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs takes into effect. This is in response to legislation introduced by Safe Work Australia.
Environmentally sustainable procurement policy
If your business supplies goods or services to the government, you will be affected by the Australian Government’s new Environmentally Sustainable Procurement Policy from 1 July 2024.
Casual employment
There are multiple changes to casual employment laws from 26 August 2024. These include changes to the casual employee definition, changes from casual to permanent employment contracts, and employer obligations to provide casual employees with a Casual Employment Information Sheet.
Independent contractor changes
Changes to definitions and protections for independent contractors take effect from 26 August 2026.
Right to disconnect
Eligible employees working for non-small business employers will have the right to refuse employer or third-party contact outside of working hours from 26 August 2024. This will apply for employees working for small business employers from 26 August 2025.
