Research by atWork Australia found only 50 per cent of young Australians are confident of achieving current or future career goals. Australia recorded a youth unemployment rate of 9.7 per cent in May 2024, with unemployed youth citing challenges while trying to break into the workforce.
Marginalised communities and women are finding it more difficult to enter the workforce and require targeted support and resources to be able to equip themselves with foundational skills essential to thrive in the workplace. Some of the barriers faced are systemic inequities, limited access to quality education, lack of training and pervasive social biases.
Youth are also feeling the effects of the cost-of-living crisis citing that they need to earn more than $100,000 a year to live comfortably and are prioritising a good salary when selecting a job. Data from ABS shows that the most common range of income for young Australians is between $26,000 – $51,993.
