October is Safe Work Month – a time to commit to building a safe and healthy workplace. Work health and safety (WHS) involves the management of risks to the health and safety of everyone in the workplace. But where can you find out about WHS obligations, risks and safe working practices?

Safe Work Australia develops national policy to improve WHS and workers’ compensation arrangements across Australia. Their website is a great resource and includes an A-Z Hazards library, information on specific Industry and Business areas plus tools to help you manage risks and protect health and safety in the workplace.

Each state has its own WHS laws. WorkSafe Western Australia, part of the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, regulates and enforces WHS laws in WA, administers workers’ compensation arrangements and can offer advice about WHS issues and laws.
