Australia’s border closures in 2021 led to an larger drop in enrolments from international students than that seen in 2020. The largest declines were experienced by the English-language training sector (ELICOS) and schools. Higher education experienced a 13% decline in enrolments and a 22% drop in commencements and vocational education (VET) was the least affected with only a 6.5% drop in enrolments but a higher drop in commencements of 16%.
With the re-opening of borders, student visa volumes are showing signs of recovery, although as yet not to pre-pandemic levels.
