Almost 10,000 people have secured permanent visas in 2020-21 through the federal government’s migration scheme for highly-skilled technologists.

The program aims to attract the best and brightest tech talent from around the world with fast-tracked permanent residency. The program is aimed at future-focused sectors including education; tourism; the circular economy; resources; agri-food and agtech; energy; health industries; defence, advanced manufacturing and space; digitech; and financial services and fintech.

Only around 20 percent of the places have gone to offshore applicants, with the remaining visa snapped up by people already in Australia.

The majority of places are in the southern states of NSW (3845) and Victoria (2418), as well as Queensland (1465) and Western Australia (852).
