Finance & Insurance :

The Finance & Insurance Industry covers the financial services sector of banking and investment, insurance, conveyancing, credit unions and finance companies, financial planning and superannuation.

The Finance & Insurance industry contributes around 4.2% of the Gross State Product and employs about 26 950 or 2.6% of Western Australia's workforce across a broad range of occupations. The top four occupations in the sector are :

  • Bank workers
  • Financial dealers and brokers
  • Financial advisers
  • Credit and loan officers

WA's share of the nation's 30 000 enterprises in the industry is, at 6.9%, slightly lower than its population share af around 10%, but this reflects the tendency for financial institutions to be highly centralised with head offices operating out of Sydney and/or Melbourne.

According to NIEIR (June 2006) employment for this industry is expected to have an average annual growth of 2.1% of the period 2005/06 to 2012/13.

The industry's workforce is characterised as :

  • Predominantly female workforce (57%)
  • Relatively young
  • High levels (around 78%) of fulltime employment
  • High percentage (55% in 2001) with no post-school qualification

Property & Business Services :

The Property & Business Services sector is one of the largest in WA's economy with over 110 000 employees covering around 600 diverse occupations. The largest of these are :

  • Commercial cleaners
  • Secretaries
  • Property Managers
  • Security Officers
  • Receptionists

In 2005/6 the industry contributed 10% to the WA Gross State Product and according to NIEIR (June 2006) is expected to have average annual growth at 3.9% over the period 2005/06 to 2012/13.

Due largely to outsourcing of non-core functions, the sector has experienced high employment growth over the past 5 years and this is expected to continue.

There is a predominance of small and micro-businesses in the sector, with over 22% of all small businesses operating in industries within the Property & Business Services area.

Generally, most employees are male and most work full-time, however this varies greatly across the many diverse industries and occupations within the sector.
